Description
Our gut microbiota is capable of producing three short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) through the fermentation of undigested dietary fiber: propionate, acetate and butyrate.
The production of these metabolites, which are the products of bacterial digestion, breaks down as follows: 15% butyrate, 25% propionate, and 60% acetate.
Since butyrate is the least abundant SCFA and yet plays a vital role in maintaining good gut health, supplementation may be necessary.
Therefore, butyrate is a postbiotic that is metabolized in the colon. A postbiotic is a preparation of non-living microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit to its host. These “components” include various elements of the microorganism, such as metabolites—that is, substances produced (as in the case of butyrate) or utilized by the microorganism during its metabolic processes.
FENIOUX Laboratories offers microencapsulated sodium butyrate in an acid-resistant vegetable capsule for optimal absorption.
